Stray Cat Alliance is a non-profit organization focused on educating and empowering communities to advocate for every cat’s right to be safe, healthy, and valued. Every day, our team works to save the helpless lives of kittens and cats by providing: spay/neuter, trap neuter return (TNR), adoptions, wellness care, medical care, and community shelter support. Our goals are to:
- Eradicate cruelty toward cats through advocacy, rescue, and education.
- Find loving forever homes for cats and kittens taken in through all of our programs.
- Help shelters transform themselves into safe havens for cats by implementing Stray Cat Alliance’s life-saving policies and procedures.
- Educate the community about the plight of free‐roaming cats and empower people to take action to stop population growth through spay and neuter.
- Create and sustain a No-Kill Nation by mentoring other communities to become no kill through our grassroots programs.

Reporting directly to the Cat Care Manager, the Cat Care Assistant is responsible for ensuring the health and well being of all cats in our care. The Cat Care Assistant plays a key role in advancing Stray Cat Alliance’s mission and goals from an animal care perspective. The successful candidate will be a caring, team-oriented individual who possesses excellent communication skills and is committed to improving the lives of cats and kittens. The role involves working with people (including volunteers, fosters, and potential adopters) and cats and kittens. This position will have one main work location: our shelter facility in Los Angeles (90018).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Feed, water, nurture, and care for cats
- Check for signs of disease or distress
- Understand and follow quarantine protocols
- Appropriately handle and restrain cats
- Administer medications
- Administer topical treatments in a sterile setting
- Assist doctors, technicians, and other personnel with treatments and restraint
- Train and support volunteers to feed, medicate, and socialize cats on site
- Perform care on cats that are injured or have gone through surgery
- Brush, bathe, and trim nails of cats
- Keep records of feeding, exercise, and medication administered
- Update behavior and medical notes in our shelter management system
- Deep clean and disinfect pens and cages
- Remove all feces and urine from cages and surrounding areas
- Do laundry
- Assist supervisor with weekly inventory
- Ensure safe transport of animals
- Comply with all shelter protocols
- Collaborate with and provide guidance to volunteers assisting in cat care, transports, fostering, and adopting
- Other duties as assigned
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Shelter medicine/care experience a plus
- Veterinary hospital/clinic experience a plus
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate in team settings across cultures and internally within a diverse and dynamic organization
- Strong interpersonal skills, presence and ability to effectively build strong relationships both internally and externally
- Ability to work evenings and weekends.
- Must love cats!
PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS
- This position involves walking or standing for extended periods of time with frequent work in a bent position. The employee is frequently required to bend, reach, squat and sit. The employee is occasionally required to operate, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
- Must be able to work around animals (including deceased, injured, and/or potentially aggressive animals), loud noises, chlorine or other chemicals.
- May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches and contagious diseases.
- Must be able to routinely lift up to 25 pounds.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud.
- This job operates in a shelter environment in an active rescue organization with cats and other staff members on site.
- This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers and phones.

TIME COMMITMENT
- Full-time (non-exempt) with an average of 40 hours per week, including weekend and holiday work. Position could include split-shifts and irregular days/hours, which may include weekends, early morning and late evening hours.
PAY RATE
$17.50
BENEFITS
- Full-time employees are eligible for insurance benefits on the first day of the next month after hire.
- 10 days paid vacation plus 6 paid sick days accrued within the first year of employment.
