POSITION PURPOSE
Creative Communications is a multiple-unit department engaged in the planning, design, creation, distribution and development of communications products. The department generates more than $10 million is self-sustaining revenues annually and administers an appropriated annual budget of more than $2.5 million and has 74 full-time employees and 20 part-time employees, including Interns and Student Assistants.

Under the supervision of Program Support Supervisor II, this position works in a dynamic customer focused team that serves University of Washington departments with their mail production and delivery needs. Under the policies and procedures of Creative Communications, this position will have a variety of responsibilities, including sorting, delivering, collecting and rating U.S. Government mail, campus mail and freight; operating delivery trucks, vans and bicycles as required incidental to the distribution and collection of mail, supplies or services for the university. Operating manual and electric powered equipment to move materials. Operating mail processing equipment and manual mail processing in our bulk mail center.

This position requires the ability to work with a variety of people and to work under pressure while maintaining a positive service attitude.

The work hours for this position is 7:30am to 4:00pm, Monday through Friday.
Incumbent may be called upon to work overtime during peak work periods.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Drive a variety of trucks and other motorized vehicles as well as bicycles.
  • Deliver, receive and collect United States mail and private courier, delivery services including packages, campus mail including books, files, cartons, packages, overnight express, pallets and additional supplies etc.
  • Case and sort United States postal and campus mail; load/unload mail sacks.
  • Sort, classify, and rate mail for proper postage.
  • Operate mail processing equipment, such as mail metering machines, Videojet addressing, tabbing, folding, including manual handwork in our bulk mail center.
  • Make delivery to, and pick up from, U.S. Postal facilities, bulk, insured, overnight express, registered, certified, and regular mail.
  • Pick up or drop off mail and materials from UW departments or vendors as needed.
  • Use receiving & tracking computer system to track and account for incoming accountable mail, packages, materials and goods.
  • Use hand trucks, dollies, mail carts, bicycle, bicycle trailers and pallet jacks in the transport of materials.
  • Will be assigned to our Shipping & Receiving operation as needed and provide all related duties/services to those operations.
  • May make on-campus deliveries of newspapers, record retention boxes, supplies and pick up’s for commercial surface or air transport services.
  • Participate in our process improvement strategies, workflow improvements.
  • Perform related duties as required.

    Supervision Received:
  • Supervised by the Program Support Supervisor II.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • High School graduation or GED Certificate
  • Six months’ office or clerical experience may be substituted for educational requirements.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • A valid Washington State motor vehicle operator’s license.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability and willingness to do constant lifting and work outside in all types of weather conditions
  • Experience with wide variety of mail rating and/or processing equipment
  • Ability to multi-task under changing priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Participated in a work environment using LEAN or a similar structured process improvement system

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must be able to lift and carry weights up to 70 pounds and push, pull up to 100 pounds. For heavier weights the skill to use manual or electric powered equipment to move materials.
